Growing Hope: PWI Tree Planting Activity with School Children

Patrice Wellness Initiative (PWI) Uganda conducted a meaningful environmental and mental health activity involving 300 pupils from Prince Junior Primary School in Masaka and Buvuma Junior School in Kyankwanzi District. The initiative combined environmental conservation with psychosocial learning, helping children understand the connection between nature, wellbeing, and community responsibility.

Purpose of the Activity

The activity was designed to increase awareness among children about climate change and its effects on daily life and emotional wellbeing. Many communities experience stress, fear, and uncertainty due to environmental changes such as prolonged droughts, floods, and displacement. By introducing this topic early, pupils learned that mental health is influenced not only by personal experiences but also by the surrounding environment.

The program also aimed to teach positive coping skills through collective action. Instead of feeling helpless about environmental challenges, pupils were encouraged to participate in solutions that improve both their surroundings and their emotional resilience.

Awareness Sessions

During the sessions, pupils were guided through simple discussions about environmental degradation and extreme weather conditions. Facilitators explained how these challenges can contribute to anxiety, stress, and insecurity in families and communities. Children shared their experiences of changing seasons, crop failures, and community disruptions, helping them recognize their emotions and understand they are not alone.

Impact on Mental Health and Wellbeing
