Patrice Wellness Initiative (PWI) Uganda conducted interactive mental health awareness sessions with 125 boys at Prince Junior Primary School. The activity focused on helping learners understand mental health challenges, their causes, and practical ways to respond positively.
Understanding Everyday Challenges
The discussions explored common family situations that affect emotional wellbeing. Topics included conflict at home, neglect, poverty, and lack of communication between parents and children. Facilitators explained how these experiences can create anger, stress, confusion, and sometimes lead young people into harmful behaviors such as drug and substance use.
Creating a Safe Space
The boys were encouraged to speak openly about their feelings and personal experiences in a respectful and supportive environment. Many shared pressures they face at home and school. This openness helped normalize emotional struggles and reduced fear of judgment among peers.
Learning Healthy Coping Skills
Participants received practical guidance on managing stress and making positive choices. The sessions emphasized resilience, self-control, and responsibility. Boys learned alternative ways to handle pressure including engaging in sports, creative activities, teamwork, and peer-support networks.
Positive Impact
By equipping the boys with knowledge and coping strategies, the program strengthened confidence and emotional awareness. Participants left with a clearer understanding of how to manage challenges without resorting to harmful behaviors, improving both their wellbeing and social relationships.
Conclusion
This milestone highlighted the importance of involving boys in mental health education early in life. Through open conversation and practical life skills, Patrice Wellness Initiative helped young learners build healthier habits, stronger resilience, and a foundation for responsible adulthood.
