Comprehensive School Outreach and Psychosocial Support

Patrice Wellness Initiative (PWI) Uganda conducted extensive school outreach activities at Buvuma Primary School and St. Raphael Junior School–Buvuma in Mpigi District. The programs combined counseling, mental health education, life skills training, and environmental activities to support learners’ wellbeing and development.

Listening to Children’s Voices

During the visit to Buvuma Primary School, pupils openly shared personal challenges and traumatic experiences affecting their daily lives. Immediate guidance and psychosocial support were provided, while more complex cases were documented and referred to appropriate support services through the school administration. The engagement encouraged children to embrace their challenges with courage and hope.

Creating Meaningful Change

The activities brought visible impact within the school community. Tree planting improved the learning environment and helped pupils understand the relationship between climate change, stress, and wellbeing. Over fifty girls gained practical menstrual hygiene knowledge, boosting confidence and reducing stigma. Career guidance sessions encouraged future planning, while safe spaces allowed boys and girls to share challenges and receive support.

Collaboration with Ssena Healing Africa strengthened continuity of care, and teachers committed to integrating wellness practices into everyday school routines.

Structured Outreach Program

At St. Raphael Junior School–Buvuma, the outreach followed a consultative meeting with the administration to identify priority areas including academic excellence, self-awareness, hygiene, and decision-making. The program integrated these needs with mental health awareness, menstrual hygiene education, and substance use prevention.

More than 300 learners from Primary One to Primary Seven participated in age-appropriate sessions. Younger pupils focused on self-esteem, safety, positive life choices, hygiene, and academic habits. Upper primary learners attended specialized sessions addressing drug abuse, childhood sexual violence, discipline, peer pressure, and emotional resilience.

Interactive Learning and Life Skills

Students actively participated through discussions, role-plays, and guided exercises. They practiced time management, goal setting, gratitude, and positive affirmations. Scenario-based learning helped learners understand peer influence, distinguish healthy friendships from harmful pressure, and develop assertiveness skills to make safe choices.

Safe spaces were created to encourage open dialogue and confidence building. Outstanding participation was recognized through appreciation sessions, reinforcing learning and motivation.

Impact on Learners and Teachers

The outreach reached over 550 learners and strengthened coping skills, confidence, and responsible decision-making. Teachers expressed appreciation and requested further capacity building to better support student wellbeing.

The program demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated school-based mental health education in nurturing informed, resilient, and responsible learners while positively influencing the wider community.

Conclusion

Through counseling, education, and supportive engagement, Patrice Wellness Initiative continues to empower young people with knowledge, confidence, and practical skills. The outreach strengthened emotional wellbeing, promoted safe behaviors, and built a healthier school environment where learners can grow academically and socially.
